Context involves the framework or structure of an experience. It is the stage upon which the story unfolds. Setting such as light and sound.

Many people lose sight of the fact that they own each and every experience stored in their memory. It is theirs to do with as they want.

No longer is is it necessary to accept the original version of a stored experience. Nor is permission from anyone required to restrucrure.

Do not forget that you are the Director and Editor, as well as the principal actor, of every experience you created and stored. You can revise the original script, change the cast of characters, or write a new ending. And all of it can be done mentally, in your mind.

Your feelings and perspective will change as the reworked version replaces the original. In other words, as you make "content" changes.

THE REPRESENTATION METHOD YOU USE

You are increasing or decreasing the itensity of an experience when you mentally change things like size, loudness, distance, etc. That is how "context" is enhanced or diminished.

Complicated? Only in the telling. It is ridiculously easy to make context changes. And the results are nothing short of sensational.

There are three methods people use to represent things, all based upon the senses - - what they see, what they hear, and what they touch-taste-smell.

Every person has one sense he or she favors most, to which the other senses, although used, take a back seat.

Those who prefer sight rely upon what something looks like (visual). Others prefer what something sounds like (auditory). Still others rely on what something feels like, inside or out (touch-taste-smell).

When speaking or writing, a visual person will use descriptive words that are tied to this preferred sense.

For example, a visual person will say things like "looks as if" or "see your point".

An auditory person will use phrases like "sounds great" or "hear you loud and clear".

A touch-taste-smell person will say things like "feels like a truck hit me" or "leaves a bad taste in my mouth".

In addition to the words used in talking, each of the three sensory modes has a number of descriptive words that characterize them.

For example, when you visualize something, it can be brighter or bigger or closer or clearer.

And when you hear something, it can sound louder or harsher or mellower.

And with respect to touch-taste-smell, it can be heavier or sweeter or smoother and so on.

CHANGE THE INTENSITY

The key to remodeling an experience stored in your memory is to mentally increase or decrease the intensity of those descriptive words.

You can learn how to extract a memory, good or bad, and mentally change the intensities.

It is like having a control panel with knobs for light and color and size and loudness and temperature and so on. You mentally turn the knobs right or left to add more or less of the feature.

If that is done with as much excitement and passion as you can muster, the subconscious will accept the revised version.

The practical significance of memory remodeling?

Negative past experiences can be neutralized. Remodeled storylines and/or settings no longer have an adverse effect on your feelings or limit your capabilities.

In the alternative, past positive experiences can be enhanced and the good feelings associated with them applied to present situations. As a result, you become more capable, creative, positive, and decisive.
